Affiliate Disclosure

Short version: some links on this site earn us a commission if you buy through them. It costs you nothing extra, and it never changes what we recommend.

How this works

Provision is free to use and doesn’t run ads. Instead, some of the products we link to — in gear pages, guides, and scenario walkthroughs — are affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, the retailer (Amazon, REI, or the manufacturer directly, depending on the product) pays us a small commission. You pay the same price either way.

This is what keeps the guides free and ad-free.

What this doesn’t change

• We pick products first, monetize second. Every recommendation starts from the question “would this actually help in this scenario,” not “does this pay a commission?” If a product with no affiliate program is the better pick, we say so.
• We don’t inflate claims to sell. Specs, prices, and capacities are sourced from the manufacturer where possible. Where we can’t verify a claim, we say so instead of guessing.
• No pay-for-placement. No brand can pay to be featured, rated higher, or excluded from criticism. We don’t accept payment in exchange for a review or recommendation.
• We link out even when we don’t earn. If the best resource for a scenario is a government agency, nonprofit, or a product with no affiliate program, we link to it anyway.

How we choose what to feature

Our editorial policy covers this in more detail, but in short: we prioritize gear that’s widely available, reasonably priced for what it does, and suited to ordinary households — not survivalist extremes. Where relevant, we note trade-offs (price vs. durability, capacity vs. portability) rather than presenting one option as universally “best.”

If you think a recommendation is off, outdated, or influenced by something other than usefulness, tell us: contact us. We’d rather fix it than defend it.
