Water Filtration and Treatment Basics
What filtration does and does not do, and how to choose a method that fits your risk.
Filtration and treatment are not the same thing, and conflating them is a common error. Filtration removes particles, bacteria and protozoa; it does not reliably remove viruses or chemical contamination.
Two jobs
| Method | Removes |
|---|---|
| Boiling | Most pathogens (1 min) |
| Filter (0.1 micron) | Bacteria, protozoa, sediment |
| Chemical (e.g. chlorine dioxide) | Viruses + bacteria (with contact time) |
| Combination | Broadest coverage |
Best practice
Choosing a method
For home storage, rotation and a sealed container are usually enough. For uncertain found water, a gravity filter plus a disinfection step is the practical combination. Match the tool to the actual local risk — do not over-buy.
Key takeaway
Store known-safe water first; treat found water as a backup, with a method you have actually practised.
