Making a Family Emergency Plan

One page that answers: who checks in, where do we meet, and what do we grab?
Preparedness is mostly coordination. A one-page plan turns panic into procedure, especially when networks are down and people are apart.
The four questions
- Who is our out-of-area contact everyone texts 'I'm OK' to?
- Where do we meet near home if we cannot return?
- Where do we meet outside the area if we must leave?
- What time do we check in, and how, if calls fail?
SMS first
Text messages often get through when calls do not during network congestion. Agree to text, not call.
Include everyone
- Children: a simple version they can understand, plus a card with the contact.
- Older relatives: medication list and a helper assigned to them.
- Pets: a go-bag and who collects them.
- Mobility needs: ground-floor plan and charged assistive devices.
