Scenario

Prolonged Blackout

A multi-day grid failure that outlasts batteries and short-term plans — the scenario energetic autonomy is built for.

The risk

When the grid is down for days, a 72-hour kit runs out, fridges spoil, phones die, and cash machines and fuel pumps stop. The households that cope are the ones generating and storing their own power.

Before

  • Build a small lighting kit (lanterns, headlamps, spare batteries).
  • Keep a power bank and a portable power station topped up.
  • Add a folding solar panel so the bank refills without mains.
  • Store extra water in case mains pressure drops for days.
  • Keep a little cash and fuel at home; both vanish early in a long outage.

During

  • Switch off appliances to avoid surge damage when power returns.
  • Ration the stored energy: charge phones, run the fridge in bursts, skip non-essentials.
  • Use the solar panel daily — it is your refilling fuel tank.
  • Check on neighbours, especially those on powered medical gear.

After

  • Discard food kept above 4 °C for over 2 hours once cooled.
  • Reset clocks and any sensitive electronics.
  • Note what ran out fastest and grow your autonomy for next time.

Equipment that helps

  • Portable power station
  • Folding solar panel
  • Rechargeable lanterns
  • Battery radio
  • CO alarm

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying only on a fixed battery with no way to refill it
  • Opening the fridge repeatedly
  • Assuming the grid will be back by night
