Know your home
- Where the water stopcock and gas shut-off are — and how to use them.
- Where the fuse/consumer box is and which circuit is which.
- Two clear exits from every room used for sleeping.
Fit the basics
- Smoke alarms on every floor; test monthly.
- A carbon-monoxide alarm if you ever use fuel heat.
- A small fire extinguisher and a blanket in the kitchen.
CO is silent
Any combustion heating during an outage makes a CO alarm essential. No exceptions.
